John had been sent to Commander hart by his personal doctor who had received some alarming lab results on Vail in Paris. Due to his age and time in deep space John was suffering from several conditions. Most of which could be fatal. He was very short of breath on his trip to the station and most of his joints were swollen and caused agony most of the time. His travel had been restricted. Loss of appetite and nausea didn't help much either. He found Commander Hart's Private office and was waiting in the area just outside for the man to arrive. John was glad it was early to avoid any prying eye's..
Basil had just finished briefing some new orderlies about their duties. Normally the head nurse would have done this, but Basil liked to see the fresh faces of "new recruits," as he called them. Somehow, it cheered him to see their enthusiasm, their eagerness, their determination to help people and save lives. Now he looked forward to a quiet and relatively dull day instead of dreading it. He was rather surprised, therefore to see Admiral Vail sitting in the waiting room. "Admiral Vail! Pleasure to see you again, sir! I suspect this has nothing to do with the inspection?" he inquired.
"Commander Hart. Good to see you once again Sir. My visit is indeed Two fold. Have you received the lab work scans from my Doctor yet?" Vail sat down on the commanders sofa with a heavy sigh...
"I have, indeed, admiral. I am somewhat surprised to see you here, though. I would think that you would want to be closer to your regular physician, who is much more familiar with you than I am. Not that I'm not honored, of course..." Basil was more than a little worried about the admiral's current physical condition, and would have ordered him straight to bed, if he had the authority.
"Well commander I've been notified by the top Surgeon not to embark on any trips that would use warp. It seems my own core wouldn't survive it."
Vail leaned back in the soft chair. "I guess I have just worn myself down to the last nub. So I'm stuck here for a while, until I heal or die..."
"Well, Admiral, I suppose the first thing I ought to do is double check your existing records and test results, then have you come back in for a more thorough consultation, and we'll see what treatments are available, and what we can do to ease your symptoms, and maybe repair some of the damage. Shall we set an appointment for tomorrow?"
"That sounds good to me. The energy seems to leave me more every day. But, I need to meet with Admiral Stone as soon as possible. Thank you for helping me with this Commander. What time should I return?"
"How does thirteen hundred hours strike you?" Basil asked.
"Well enough Commander Hart, I shall arrive a willing patient." He shook the Commanders hand and headed for the door.
