1,585 words; about a 8 minute read

Mission: Liberation Of A World
Location: Exeter, Forward Operating Base, Training Center
Timeline: Current

ON:

John had left the area that he and the Colonel had been talking in andmade his way to the training area for the civvies. He grabbed several power packs, and a couple more grenades so he could at least demonstrate.

"Corporal, I'll need several simulators sent up to the bomb range. And give me four or five RPG sims as well. I don't have long to whip these guys into shape, and I need all the help I can get."

"Yes Master Sergeant. I'll send Staff Sergeant Krupp up with them if you'd like."John smiled and nodded, signing off on the orders to have the pyro-maniac come and play with the civvies. Two minutes later he was standing in front of the Civilian Defense Force, something he swore he would never do.

"MY NAME IS MASTER SERGEANT JOHN DEAL," he bellowed out at the troops before him. "WITH EVERY QUESTION I ASK, YOU WILL GIVE ME A HOO-RAH MASTER SERGEANT. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"

"Hoo-rah Master Sergeant," the Defense Force said half heartedly.

"IF YOU CONTINUE LIKE THIS, IT WILL BE A VERY LONG 63 HOURS. THAT IS HOW LONG YOU ARE UNDER MY COMMAND. EACH AND EVERYONE OF YOU ARE NO BETTER THAN A CADET. EVEN MY NEWEST GREEN HORN OUT RANKS YOU RIGHT NOW. DO YOU UNDERSTAND ME?"

Otto was busy putting a photon grenade back together when a Corporal came into the Armory and started asking for arty and RPG simulators. Grabbing then necessary kits he also grabbed some live explosive and an RPG launcher and some warheads for it. Making his way to the training field, Otto went to the explosive range and started rigging simulators in the assigned pits.

"Hoo-Rah Master Sergeant," the group said louder. John looked around at his Marines and shook his head.

"This is going to bea long couple of days for these guys. I'm going to need stim rations, food cubes, and our cots set up, with tents. I'm not going to be sleep derived just because these guys got shit for brains." The Marines smiled evilly, and left to make sure that the command/sleep center was being set up, right in front of where the civvie defense league was going to be standing guard all night.

"NOW, WE'RE GOING TO GO SEE A FRIEND OF MINE!" John yelled at the defense force. "YOU'RE GOING TO LEARN THREE THINGS AT ONCE. HOW TO LISTEN TO ORDERS, MARCH TO A CADENCE, BLOW UP ENEMY POSITIONS, AND STAY ALIVE."

"Uhhh, Master Sergeant, thats four things," a Butter Bar said from in front of the ranks. Two of the Marines that had stayed behind to look menacing couldn't help but start to laugh.

Otto just fininshed rigging the last simulator plus an additional charge at the end of the range when he seen the group make its way towards the explosive range. Looking at John, Otto chuckled to himself, noticing the group of wannabe soldiers with him.

John caught the whiff of a smile on Otto and shook his head. "Staff Sergeant, meet the local defense force. I'm going to be taking a small contingent, the better of them, with me for some more in depth training, and perhaps create a Special Forces group and training center here on Exeter. What do you think?"

"Sounds like your going to try the old 'General von Steuben' trick. Sounds good to me and it'll free us up for other operations..." Otto said.

"Thats the plan Otto," John said with a smile before turning back and looking at the lines that the civvies had formed. "You've got to be kidding me," he sighed. "YOU WILL BE IN STATELY LINES IN TEN SECONDS OR YOU WILL ALL PUSH!" he bellowed out and watched as they scrambled. "TEN, THREE, DROP!"

Otto kept his face stern as he watched the civvies start doing push ups. "Not the most disciplined bunch are they? I better be careful with the simulators, might scare their bones out of their skin..." Otto said with a small grin.

"Thats the plan Sergeant," John said out of the corner of his mouth. "RECOVER!" he called out, and they stood. "NOW, YOU'RE GOING TO BE GIVING YOUR COMPLETE ATTENTION TO STAFF SERGEANT KRUPP, WHO IS GOING TO SHOW YOU SOME OF HIS TOYS." Looking over he nodded and walked away, to the lines. He wanted to hear what the recruits were going to say about a Staff Sergeant teaching them something.

"GENTLEMAN! I AM TO BE YOUR INSTRUCTOR OF THE MORE DESTRUCTIVE ITEMS IN OUR ARSENAL! FROM PROPER RPG USE TO SETTING BASIC TRAPS AND AVOIDING THEM ALONG WITH USE IN DEMO, CLAYMORES AND MINES!" Otto shouted to the assembled troops.

One EDF Lieutenant had the nerve to speak up. "Sergeant why mines? We wont need to use them." Otto looked at the LT and smiled. "Sir. If you could please step up here and I'll show you personnally what we do with mines." With a smug grin the Lieutenant started walking towards Otto and after a few feet suddenly heard a loud click and stopped dead in his tracks. Otto said "Congratulations. You just stepped on the Breen version of a Bouncing Betty with a double fuse. What do you do?" Otto then thought, "Man, my grandma could've seen that thing. Hell, Sergeant Deal took a longer step to go over it!" Otto then addressed the troops "I'LL TELL YOU WHAT HE DOES. VERY CALMLY YOU ASK FOR HELP. IN YOUR KIT WE ARE SUPPLYING YOU IS A MINE DEFUSER." Otto took out an item the size of a large coin and held it in the air. "THIS LITTLE DEVICE WILL SAVE YOUR LIFE IF YOU KNOW HOW TO USE IT. IT IS EVEN BETTER TO KNOW WHAT TO LOOK FOR TO AVOID SUCH A FATE!"

John continued to walk around the troops and spotted something odd. With a smile on his face, he grabbed a local coin and smiled. "Sergeant, what do they do once..." Smiling again he shut up and flipped the coin. "Never mind, continue with the lesson Sergeant. Theres another one thats on the way very quickly." Walking back, he stepped over two more mines, then heard that damn click himself. Kneeling down, he quickly disabled, disarmed and dug up the grass bomb, before turning. "Even I get caught sometimes."

Otto chuckled glad he did hide some a lot better even though they were completely harmless. After a few more minutes of briefing Otto pulled out a grenade. "WE HAVE SEVERAL VARIATIONS OF GRENADES: NONLETHAL FLASH AND CONCUSSION, THE STANDARD FRAGS, PHOTONS, GAS PUKERS AND SMOKES ALONG WITH A COUPLE OTHER TYPES." Otto started throwing the grenade up and down in his hand then stopped, pulled off the safety tab, pin, and let the spoon fly. After waiting a couple of seconds Otto threw the grenade into a nearby pit and and went off with a bang. Otto pulled another grenade off his web gear, repeated the procedure and then threw it into the milling about EDF troops. In panic the troops scattered and hit the ground looking for cover and burying their heads in the dirt. With a very small pop and sizzle the dud grenade went off. "Get's them every time." Otto said with a smile, "Now the Master Sergeant will show you how to be our kinda of crazy with these little balls of fun."

Deal nodded and looked around. -^-Deal to fighter Alpha, I want the drop in fifty-three seconds, no copy, radio silnce until drop.-^- He whispered these commands, and was acknolwedged by a beep, saying the pilot had understood the orders. Grabbing a purple gas grenade he smiled and threw it as hard as he could into the distance, and watched it bounce. "One of my better throws," he said looking to Otto. "NOW, YOUR TINY LITTLE PIECES OF BREEN PUKE! YOU'RE GOING TO LEARN HOW TO EFFECTIVLY USE A CASELESS GRENADE LAUNCHER, A GRENADE, AND ANYTHING ELSE I DEEM IMPORTANT. YOU WILL LISTEN, AND LISTEN WELL. YOU HAVE LESS THAN SIXTY HOURS UNTIL YOU'RE IN THE SHIT WITHOUT MY MEN AS BACKUPS." Grabbing a Grenade form Otto, he smiled. It was one of the man's home made frags.

"THIS IS NOT THE STANDARD GRENADE, NOW WATCH CAREFULLY." Pulling the pin, he simply rolled the grenade into the hole, and watched as his support staff dodged for cover, thinking that it was on a timer. Picking up a rock, he tossed it to where he thought the grenade would be, then it exploded. He closed his eyes, and basked in the warmth of the Napalm. "ANY QUESTIONS?"

"I have one Master Sergeant," A butter bar sneered to John. "Why the hell did you throw the-" Before the man could finish the question, the fighter John had ordered dropped below the tree line, buzzing the troops. The EDF recruits dropped to the ground, thinking they were being attacked, but John stood there, turning with the thing. As they all looked up, the mountain side erupted in flames and explosions, the shockwave racing to their position, before being stopped by the mobile forcefield the pilot had dropped seconds before.

"That would be why Puke. Don't question me again."

Otto watched the airstrike in awe then mumbled, "Damn showoffs, but good show. However, look who's talking." Otto said with a chuckle
