Ian looked at the woman lying beside him and smiled. "That was a pleasant surprise."
"After last night, why would you be surprised?" she asked.
"I just meant that I wasn't expecting something like that here and now," he said to her.
"I didn't expect it, either." She gently caressed his cheek. "But I'm not sorry. I want to be with you."
Ian looked at her again and smiled. "Are you ready to go back and explore the trails?"
"We probably should. If I stay here much longer I'll turn into a prune," she said, chuckling. She kissed Ian and dove into the water, swimming back to the other side.
"Computer, towel," she said as she climbed out of the water. The towel materialized on a log and she picked it up, slowly drying herself off.
Ian stepped out of the water and called for a towel of his own. When he was dry he dressed quickly and grabbed his pack and waited for her.
Raven raised an eyebrow at his eagerness to be moving again. She turned her back to him, not wanting him to see her confusion as she dressed. She picked up her backpack and turned to face him. "Okay. Let's see how far we can get before we need to set camp."
Ian looked at her for a moment. "There's no hurry. There's miles of trails and multiple places to set up camp."
Raven stopped and looked at him. "Ian, what do you want to do?"
"I want to hike through the trails and enjoy the scenery and enjoy each other's company," he said to her.
"Okay," she responded, smiling. "Let's go."
Ian nodded and reached out to hold her hand as he began walking up the trail, watching the animals and thinking back to everything that had happened already.
Raven smiled when he took her hand. The camping trip was already more than she'd hoped for. As was Ian.
Ian led her further up the trail. After many twists and turns in the trail he led her down a side trail. A moment later they came out of the woods and stopped near a cliff. A log nearby offered a place to sit, allowing a view of a valley the spread out before them.
Raven grinned in delight. She slipped off her backpack and walked over to the log. The view was breathtaking. The sun was low in the sky, promising a beautiful sunset.
Ian smiled at her reaction and set his pack on the ground before walking over to sit beside her on the log. He put his arm around her and held her as he looked out over the valley.
She smiled and moved closer to him, laying her head on his shoulder. It was peaceful here. To her, there was nothing like being in the mountains. Especially when you were with someone you loved.
"There's a clearing not far from here," he said to her. "We could set up camp there and still be close to this spot."
"Okay," she said, although she was reluctant to move. "Do you want to set up a tent or sleep under the stars?"
"Normally I would recommend a tent for privacy but since we're alone and it's a beautiful night I think it would be nice to sleep under the stars," he said to her. "The clearing is only about 100 meters from here so we can go when you're ready."
"I'm not ready, but we should get everything set up before it gets much darker." The sun had set and it wouldn't be long before it grew dark.
They picked up their packs and headed for the clearing. When they got there, Raven looked around. "If you set up the sleeping bags, I'll prepare a clearing for a fire."
Ian nodded and moved to the packs, pulling supplies out of them. He looked around and chose a nice level area. He walked over and moved some of the rocks and spread the sleeping bags out. He turned to watch Raven and smiled.
Raven cleared a 3-meter circle of leaves and debris. Then she dug a shallow pit and lined it with rocks. Finally, she built the fire. Dry leaves, kindling, then some larger pieces of wood. When she was done, she turned to Ian. "Do we have something to light the fire?"
"There should be something in the side pocket on your backpack," he said to her, still standing where he was and watching her. She was very efficient in her movements and he was impressed.
She found the item. She also found, in her pack, graham crackers, marshmallows and, best of all, chocolate.
She quickly lit the fire and watched to make sure the fire would take; then she found two long sticks and sharpened them. "Come join me," she said to Ian, holding out a stick. "You can't go camping without s'mores."
Ian smiled and moved to sit beside her. "That started out as just marshmallows," he said to her. "Then I remembered your addiction to chocolate so I threw some in as well. Then I figured that since we had the other ingredients I might as well add the crackers."
Raven kissed him happily, then put three marshmallows on her stick to roast.
She let the marshmallows catch on fire, blew them out and set them on a cracker. She added a layer of chocolate, another cracker, smushed them together, and took a bite. When she'd finished her s'more she looked at Ian. "I've always liked my marshmallows burnt on the outside and soft in the middle," she confessed with a grin.
Ian made a s'more and took a bite. He looked at her and smiled. "That's the way I like it as well." He looked at her more closely and leaned closer to her. "You have a little chocolate on the side of your lip," he said. He leaned closer and softly licked it off before kissing her. "There," he said with a wink as he straightened and finished his s'more.
Raven caught her breath when he touched her mouth. It took her a moment before she could breathe normally. With a mischievous grin, she prepared another s'more and held it in front of his mouth, offering him a bite.
Ian looked at her and leaned closer to take a bite of the s'more.
Raven took a bite as well. After she'd eaten it, she noticed that Ian also had a smudge of chocolate... "Your turn," she teased as she leaned in, licked off the spot of chocolate, and then kissed Ian.
Ian smiled and reached up to caress her cheek. "I like this game," he whispered to her.
She took his hand and kissed it. "So do I," she replied softly. She held up the last bite of s'more for Ian to eat..
Ian smiled at her and squeezed her hand as he leaned in to eat the last bite.
The sky was dark now and the stars were clearly visible. "Do you want to make more s'mores?" she asked.
"I think I've had enough," he said to her. "You can eat more if you like," he told her. "Or we can go for another walk."
