Respectfully Requesting

532 words; about a 3 minute read

Mission: A Fresh Start
Location: Admiral Burke's Office

Captain Hawkins sat calmly outside Admiral Burke's Office, awaiting his opportunity to speak with her regarding his somewhat irregular request.

Millie Draven, the Admiral's Assistant, sat at her desk, busily working on the day's reports. Her computer chimed and she looked up at the Captain. "The Admiral will see you now."

Walking into the Admiral's office, Hawk extended his hand. "It's a pleasure to finally meet you in person Admiral." Hawk smiled.

"Captain Hawkins," Kathryn said, her smile friendly as she shook his hand. "Welcome to Typhon. Can I get you something to drink?"

Something about being in the presence of superior officers had a tendency to make him parched. "Yes Ma'am. Ice water please." He walked over to the informal sitting area. "Do you mind if I sit?"

"Please do," she said as she got two glasses of ice water from the replicator. She walked back to the Captain and handed him one of the glasses. Then she took a seat opposite him. "So, what can I do for you, Captain?"

Crossing his legs, Hawk took a generous drink of the water and sank back into the chair. "I have a bit of an unusual request Admiral, involving the Runnymede..."

"Your Prometheus-class, correct?" she said, taking a sip of her water.

"Yes Ma'am." Hawk confirmed, apprehensive about the direction this conversation seemed to take.

"So what is your request regarding the Runnymede?" she asked, watching the Captain's face.

Hawk nodded and continued. "With your permission Admiral, I would like to keep the Runnymede as a garrison ship for the Typhon."

Kathryn expected that. She picked up a PADD from her desk and handed it to Hawk. "Already done."

"Ma'am?" Hawkins immediately arched an eyebrow.

"Your ship, Captain, has been reassigned to the Starbase. With the new construction and expanded operations the Fleet Admiralty believes Typhon needs more than a Nova-class for a garrison ship."

Captain Hawkins looking genuinely surprised and smiled. "Thank you Admiral! I thought I was going to have to put up a fight on that one."

Kathryn grinned. "It's nice to know I can still surprise my Captains from time to time."

"Admiral, pleasant surprises today are more than welcome." Hawk sighed lightly and took another drink of his water.

"Rough day at the office, Captain?" she asked with a slight smile.

Hawk nodded. "Frankly Admiral, I wasn't expecting the station to be this far removed from appropriate order. I knew that there were to be challenges. I knew that I would be forced to adapt quickly. And frankly I'm up to the challenge, but I didn't realize that everything would be left undone."

"You wouldn't be here if you weren't up to the challenge," Kathryn assured him. "The Starbase was in a better state of order before Commodore Fannin left for Earth a few months ago. When he came back he was ... distracted."

"I understand Admiral." Hawk took another sip of his water. "Do you have any specific directives?"

"Not at the moment, but I do know where to find you if I need you," she said.
