Sam shook her head, trying not to laugh herself. She took out a small bag and scraped some of the lichen into it to analyze later. As she did so, she heard a scraping noise coming from further down the tunnel. She froze, listening carefully.

Four more came behind the other three...

Trent's carbine swept the room from creature to creature. The growling creatures, while slightly timid on their own, seemed to be getting bolder as their numbers swelled. From the way they were moving it was evident that they were pack hunters, what they may have lacked in size they would surely have made up for by numbers and vicious nature. One of the creatures looked at Trent and furled back his lips, showing the rows of razor sharp teeth.

Without any seeming leader, the group of creatures spread out and slowly started moving towards the team. Each one of them was growling and hissing, much like a cat would though much deeper and it seemed to have a resonance.

"Uh," Trent started, as he slowly backed away from the creatures. "Forget cute and cuddly. These are BIG f***ing rats with BIG f***ing teeth." He picked up one of the pots and hurled it at the closest animal. The animal dodged the throw with a speed that surprised the Marine and the pot shattered harmlessly on the ground.

The sudden action halted the creatures in their advance. The intended target of the pot simply looked to its shattered remnants and snarled. Again, almost as one the pack resumed its slow march towards its prey.

As if on cue, one of the creatures lunged at Sam. She shot it with her phaser and it fell to the ground. The other two lunged as well and were shot by Sam and Raven.

The rest of the giant otter/badger-like creatures backed up and clumped in the middle of the tunnel as if they were deciding what to do next.

Sam walked carefully over to the three dead creatures and had a good look while the Marines kept their weapons trained on the pack, unsure if they should shoot or wait to see if the creatures ran away.

Their paws were incredibly large for their size, the claws were vicious. One good hit and they could do some serious damage. But it was the fangs that caught her interest. Long, sharp and stained with a thick, yellowish substance that didn't resemble their saliva. She pulled out her tricorder and scanned the creatures, then looked up, alarmed. "They're venomous. Don't let the fangs touch you. They contain a neurotoxin."
